HYPERSPIM – ERC Advanced Project

High-dimensional computing: algorithms and machines

THE PROJECT

Start date: 1 January 2025 – End date: 31 December 2029

As part of the ERC Advanced Grants 2023, the European Union has selected the Hyperspim project, which will be funded with €2.5 million. The project, chosen by the European Research Council, aims to develop a new generation of photonic computers. The optical computation on which it is based drastically reduces electricity consumption and the environmental impact of traditional computers, which are becoming unsustainable due to the significant energy resources required for machine learning.

Hyperspim leverages laser beams and new algorithms developed by Claudio Conti, Professor at the Department of Physics at Sapienza University, and his collaborators.

The project aspires to surpass current classical and quantum computers through innovative photonic technologies capable of simultaneously processing millions of qubits, compared to the few hundred achievable with existing technologies. These new optical computers will enable an innovative and energy-efficient approach to large-scale computational problems that impact everyday life, such as drug development or artificial intelligence.
